Outstanding "Collegiate Age" Scholarship and Learning Program Opportunities

Maria Martin passed on the links below describing opportunities that her daughter took advantage of and benefited immensely from as part of her post high school educational path in the field of engineering.  I strongly recommend you take the time to go to these websites that could provide information helpful for you to maximize your teen's career training.  Participation in any or all of the three opportunities would be well worth the time invested by your teen....even if it was as stretch for them.... as they are  "resume builders" that could distinguish your teen from other college graduates when looking/competing  for that first job in their chosen field....as they did for Maria and Paul Martin's daughter Stephanie in the engineering field.

Prospective Students
Apply to QUEST
Join Cohort 20*! Current freshmen enrolled in business, engineering, or computer, math and natural science majors are invited to become part of QUEST. QUEST is a challenging action learning program focusing on quality management, process improvement and system design in a team setting. Students follow a series of five courses during the three year program and participate in co-curricular learning and community events each semester. After successful completion of the program, students receive a citation on their diploma, not to mention access to the QUEST network of alumni, friends, and corporate sponsors during their time in the program.

Admissions Information
Student Qualifications
QUEST is a three-year academic program, therefore, business, engineering and computer, math and natural sciences freshman are encouraged to apply. Admittance to the QUEST Program is contingent upon current admission to one of these participating schools. Students who are interested in applying to QUEST should achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher and have taken a minimum of 12 credit hours at the University of Maryland, College Park. Students admitted into the program are expected to remain active for the duration of the entire program.
Admissions Process
Each spring QUEST collects applications for the incoming cohort (a group of students who enter the program together and participate in classes together). Applications are available online at the beginning of the spring semester. Those applying will enter general information, answer essay questions and collect one letter of recommendation. Applications are reviewed by a selections committee comprised of students, alumni, faculty and staff. Applicants are notified during mid or late April.
Expectations
All incoming QUEST students must participate in an offsite orientation prior to the start of classes the fall that they are admitted. QUEST Orientation takes place prior to the first day of fall classes each year.
As a member of QUEST, each student is required to complete a sequence of courses that train students in quality enhancement through teamwork as well as participate in additional extra-curricular enhancement activities. More information about the curriculum and enhancement activities

Welcome to SURF
Gaithersburg, MD

Dear Student or Colleague:
You and your school are invited to participate in the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Gaithersburg, MD Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for students majoring in science, mathematics and engineering. Note that applications for participation in the SURF program are only accepted from colleges or universities, and not from individual students. Please prepare a single proposal from your institution to the NIST SURF program. This proposal, using the forms provided, will include a portion completed by an institutional representative and a set of materials provided by each student applicant. Students can participate in any one of the six NIST laboratories:
  • Material Measurement Laboratory
  • Physical Measurement Laboratory
  • Engineering Laboratory
  • Information Technology Laboratory
  • Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology
  • NIST Center for Neutron Research
The student application form should indicate in which laboratory he/she is most interested. The applications will be considered by the student's first choice, then second choice and finally by all programs, with consideration of the student's preferences and research interests. Please circulate the information about this program to other appropriate academic departments and administrative staff at your institution.
SURFing is a partnership, supported by NIST, NSF, and the participating colleges/universities. We anticipate providing meaningful research opportunities for approximately 130 students in the Gaithersburg site-wide program. The NIST facilities are located just outside Washington, DC.
The NIST site in Boulder, Colorado, also operates a SURF programs with a distinctly separate application. Students are encouraged to review research opportunities inBoulder. An application for one SURF program does not constitute an application for the other.
The SURF Program is anticipated to run between May 23 - August 5, 2011; adjustments may be made to accommodate specific academic schedules (e.g., a limited number of 9-week (June 6 - August 5, 2011 slots).
Further information for individual Laboratories can be found through the website
